SUSPECTED ARSON: A derelict house in Worcester St was damaged in a suspected arson overnight.

Arson is suspected after a derelict house caught fire in central Christchurch.

Firefighters were called to an abandoned two-storey Worcester St home, near Barbadoes St, about 11:30pm yesterday.

A Fire Service spokesman said it was "well involved" when they arrived.

The suspicious fire was contained and extinguished within two hours, but firefighters stayed until about 4:30am today to make sure it did not spark up again.

He said the property was "extensively damaged".

Fire Safety and police would be on site to investigate this morning.
