Warm, windy day

It's hard to imagine winter weather better suited to a picnic. Today is the day Cantabrians! Before the lovely day turns on you, grab a blanket and some plastic cricket wickets and get to a park near you.

It's already 20 degrees Celsius in Christchurch and bordering on shorts weather. MetService says it's going to turn nasty later this afternoon, so make the most of it now.

A severe weather warning is in place for much of the South Island. Canterbury should expect northwest gales up to 130 kmph later today with some areas getting 150 kmph winds.

They should ease early this evening.

For those opposed to picnics, there are all the usual markets on this morning in New Brighton, Riccarton Bush (Christchurch Farmers Market) and Mt Pleasant.

Perhaps a brisk walk and a coffee in the sun?
