Christchurch police are seeking information about a cluster of suspicious fires in Avonside this morning.

Four fires were lit between 4.30am and 7.15am on Keller St and Avonside Dr, all inside a one-kilometre radius in the red-zoned area.

"Two fires were in unoccupied houses, another was in a garage adjacent to a vacant property and the fourth was a vegetation fire," Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Jason Stewart said.

He said police were seeking information about any suspicious activity in the Avonside Dr, Keller St and Retreat Rd area this morning.

Fire Service shift manager Jill Higgison said two crews from Christchurch worked to contain a blaze at a Keller St house about 5.50am.

"The garage was said to be fully involved when we arrived," she said.

Senior Sergeant Mike Brooklands said Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority officials had visited the Keller St property that was "virtually destroyed" in the fire.

Police are also interested in any information about a van seen in the area at the time.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Christchurch police on 03 3637 400, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Meanwhile, a fire caused extensive damage to a Wainoni Rd property about 2.15pm yesterday.

Higgison said three crews from Christchurch City and Wainoni tended to the "accidental fire" for more than an hour before returning to their stations.

She said no-one required medical assistance following the blaze.
