A Christchurch bus driver suffered a painful injury while chasing two teenagers who stole his money tin.

The driver had parked his bus on Marine Parade in New Brighton and was making some checks near the back of the vehicle about 4.30pm today.

Senior Sergeant Mike Brooklands said two "young fellas" went onto the bus and stole the driver's money tin.

The driver attempted to chase the two boys but was stopped when his Achilles tendon suddenly "snapped".

The driver was treated by St John paramedics, while the two boys fled with his money tin.

The boys were described as Maori, aged between 13 and 16, and wearing dark hoodies.

Anyone with information on the theft was asked to contact Christchurch police by calling 03 363 7400.
