A young woman was seriously injured after her hair became tangled in a conveyor belt at a vegetable processing plant this morning.

A St John spokesman said emergency services rushed to the Sharlands Rd property, near Dunsandel, about 8.20am, where the woman needed to be freed from the machinery.

It is understood she was a worker at Spain Brothers Produce Ltd.

"We have sent an ambulance and the rescue helicopter with St John paramedics on board. I understand that the patient was caught in machinery and is in a serious condition," the spokesman said.

The woman, who is in her early 20s, was taken to Christchurch Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

Spokesman Mike McLintock said the woman was visibly upset when the crew arrived after firefighters and colleagues extricated her from the machine.

He said it could have been a lot worse if a co-worker did not act quickly to turn off the conveyor belt.

McLintock said she was in a serious but stable condition.

Police and firefighters also attended the incident.
