Sir Kerry Burke's five-year reign as Environment Canterbury (ECan) chairman is over.

Burke has just been toppled in a council chamber coup led by South Canterbury councillors Mark Oldfield and Bronwen Murray.

Councillors voted 8-6 to oust Burke in a no-confidence motion.

Alec Neill has been voted in as the new chairman, 8-6 with Jo Kane retained as deputy.

The vote of no-confidence had its origins in last month's meeting in Timaru.
