Hit TV show Dancing with the Stars has been dropped for 2010.

TVNZ blamed the decision on the state of the economy.

"The decision has been made, reluctantly, because the current market conditions do not support such an expensive show," it said in a statement.

Despite its huge popularity the cost of mounting the multi-million dollar, BBC-format production has made Dancing With The Stars a very marginal venture for TVNZ - even in strong market conditions.

"In a recessionary environment the network can no longer absorb losses made by big-budget productions."

TVNZ says it is  "resting" the programme, and will re-evaluate the situation for the following year.

Downes, a former Ms New Zealand and 2006 winner, said losing the show was "really sad".

"It was one of the best experiences in my life and I just think that a lot of people really enjoyed the shows. It was just one of those great shows that the family could sit and watch together and there's not many of those shows around."

TVNZ says it may relaunch the show in 2011.

Yes. Another piece of crap off the air. A bit more of that and I might actually start watching the box again.

Wankers, what a great show, how can it be expensive, a few people dancing around for an hour - how expensive can it be.

why don't the Maori channel sponser it? they seem to have more money than mainstream tv or sky?

Thank Goodness can they know get rid of all cooking and reality crap, now we get the Apprentice with some bloke who thinks he is rich, possibly has a couple of Bob, but to be truely rich you are only in the paper twice in your life, once when born and once when you die, so just another aggravating show based on overseas lack of invention and totally crass. At least dancing was light entertainment.

Commonsense finally prevails in getting rid of that ridiculous and pathetic show including the master of ceremonies Jason Gunn. We should export him to some deserted island in the Indian Ocean.

Thank god, now hopefully all the cooking shows and all reality shows will be canned too.

I guess they had to pay for the boss's pay rise somehow.

Won't miss it. But it got me back into dancing again after (cough, splutter) a few years. I would love to have been a contestant on that show but I'm not famous enough. Actually, I'm not famous at all!!!
