Telecom XT partially restored

Some Telecom XT customers in Christchurch have had their cellphone reception restored, after a major network outage this morning.
Telecom said the restoration of its XT cellphone network sites was taking longer than expected, following a major outage affecting all of the country south of Taupo.
Telecom spokeswoman Kath Murphy said a technical fault had caused a loss of mobile service, including voice, SMS, and mobile broadband, for XT customers.
Some XT network sites had been fixed, but engineers were still working on the problem, Telecom said.
Customers' ability to contact emergency services during the outage had not been affected, Ms Murphy said. "Telecom has identified the cause of the fault and restoration work is well underway.
"A full restoration of service is expected later today."
CEO Telecom Retail, Alan Gourdie, acknowledged there had been a significant impact on XT mobile customers. "We apologise and deeply regret any inconvenience our customers experience due to the interruption of XT services."
Telecom is contacting corporate customers directly, and Telecom's website is being regularly updated.

I run a 24hr maintenance business and missed several calls including an important personal one. This was especially bad as Monday is the day clients report faults from the weekend. After using Telecom for 17yrs they have removed “pager notification” from the XT network so you don’t know you have messages for you to use a landline to retrieve them. It is bad enough being in ‘dead’ areas (10mtrs away)and missing calls without today’s mess-up. Some firms enforce 'phones off’ in vehicles and pager notification of messages would be very useful in these circumstances and also under the new road rules. Will get a Vodafone as back-up! Kevin.
since changing to telecom i have had nothing but problems with the network. previously i was with vodaphone and had great service albeit there billing wasnt the best. Other members of my family are with 2 degrees and telstra clear and they never experiance the problems with there networks that i have with telecom.come on telecom own up your new network is a lemon!!!! this must be the fourth time in 3 months that i have lost reception. BAD BAD SERVICE
I have never had a problem with my xt phone, and i had no idea so many people were even having problems with theirs. Maybe you get better reception depending on where you live.
telecom bring out a new network so it is easier and faster to contact friends and family and it goes down on the first day of the school holidays good job telecom im going to get my self a more reliable vodafone
Lack of info on when the network should be up and running is appalling. My XT phone has way less coverage than previous networks - cant take calls at home unless I step outside and no I dont live in the sticks!!
What's Yasmin into? I think she must have got Jaq into the broom cupboard and somehow got his XT wires crosed with Vodafone's 3G answerphone sysem in Manilla or Bombay or wherever these twits have their brain cells. Or maybe someone has worked out how to bounce all of Telecom's bloody XT advertising. If so keep it up!

I really am hating on XT at the moment. I woke up this morning without reception, thinking this was normal, because my phone has a problem where it goes in and out of reception. 5 Hours later, I find this story.. After months of technical faults and stuff ups, they still can't seem to get things right!? Wake up Telecom!!
What a joke! Even 2Degrees appear to have a more reliable service than Telecom's XT network. Does anyone know where to find the outage notification/updates on the Telecom website? I sure can't find anything.

There is far to much dependence placed on mobile services. No service provider can guarantee service. Mobile users need to have a Plan 'B' for unexpected issues. Who is to blame if your phone runs out of charge or is accidentally damaged. Perhaps it is your customers who need the reality check, that you will call them if they have to leave a message. After all you can only do one job at a time. It is unfortunate that Telecom who still have a Kiwi share have their issues and outages publicly aired by the media when other service providers issues go unnoticed. I think we all need to take a step back from the pressure zone, use plan B if required and enjoy the peace from the ringing phone or buzzing text for a short time, Your friends may enjoy the peace as well.
