The man, who appeared in the Christchurch District Court on four charges, including aggravated robbery, has been granted interim name suppression.
He was remanded in custody until tomorrow to allow him to be assigned legal counsel.
Christchurch South Detectives along with members of the Armed Offenders Squad arrested the man at 6am today.
The attacker threw Patricia Burrows to the ground during the robbery on December 3.
She was taken to Christchurch Hospital with a broken hip and other injuries.
Police said Mrs Burrows is still in hospital and is relieved the man has been caught and charged.
Police said they would like to thank those people who first went to help Mrs Burrows and to those who have sent her get well cards.
