Fake speed radars used to fool motorists

Transport Minister Steven Joyce supports previously secret drones being used around the country to trick speeding drivers.
It was revealed this morning that the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) has distributed 70 old police speed radars to sites around the country.
The radars, renamed drones, and each worth $150, emit a beam which activates the radar detectors in cars, fooling motorists into thinking they are entering a monitored speed zone and slowing them down.
ACC has distributed the drones for use by the police, councils and the Transport Agency.
Mr Joyce today said he had not heard of the drones until this morning.
"I think the safest answer would be for people to just not speed," he said.
"ACC and other agencies have a responsibility for road safety. ACC obviously has a very big fiscal responsibility. I think this is not a core issue, but I think the message has to be, don't speed."
Mr Joyce said the drones were "all part of the cat and mouse game" speeding motorists played with authorities to try and avoid being detected.
"And it is of course natural enough that the agencies are seeking to make sure that people don't speed. If people don't speed, that's a good thing."
Mr Joyce said he did not have an opinion on whether or not there should be more of the drones.
"I think strongly that people should think very carefully before they speed. It's very dangerous."
ACC said it had distributed about 70 drones at a cost of $10,000 and said they had reduced the speed of motorists.
The old radars have been mounted on power poles at up to 70 sites around the country and some had been bought by school bus companies to slow motorists around schools.
Officials believed one in 10 motorists had radar detectors.
Last year ACC said claims relating to speed were worth at least $81 million.
Radar detectors are banned in Australia.

OMG THEY LIE AND CHEAT TO CATCH SPEEDERS HAHAHA yea right, oh im so shocked at the callous disregard for our RIGHT to endanger other peoples lives!
Can I buy one? Or two?
Please?

That is all class! Good on you!
From what I can make out as I read this, People with radar detectors think this is a good idea!
Also the detector units them self are not 100% going to stop you getting a ticket they will allow you to drop on average 5 to 7km before the cop has your speed and can give you a ticket. I find that its a good tool to have as when I'm driving on the open road will often sit at 115km and have had three tickets at that speed in three different cars. If you choose to drive like an idiot you will only get a discounted fine. Yes it is wrong of me to speed I know how ever when driving long distance and often being the only car around who sits right on 100?
also to receive safety alerts of dangers ahead is good.
Also I must say that most of the time I see the police car or speed camera van before the radar detector goes off.
If people can be encouraged to slow down without any great cost, and it also saves ACC money, what's wrong with it? I think it's a brilliant idea and have sometimes wondered why the cops didn't just put up a bunch of fake speed cams along with the real ones.
#43 You nailed it there. There's so many delusional drivers out there who think they are "safe drivers" - they are actually causing far more problems than someone going 110kph on an open road ever would. Driver training. Is anyone listening yet?
To all you people that have winged and moaned over the years about paying speeding fines, radar detectors, speed camers, revenue gathering blah blah blah. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO PAY A FINE AND GIVE MONEY TO THE MONEY HUNGY GOVERNMENT BLAH BLAH BLAH.......DON'T SPEED. WHAT IS SO HARD ABOUT UNDERSTANDING THAT????
All for it, great idea, lets have more ideas like this such as (used in London in the '60s):-
"Put up signs "Radar in use in this area", move them around on an irregular basis. OCCASIONALLY actually HAVE a radar in use! (So people don't think it's just a "have".)
If you were exceeding the limit (50, 70 or 100), What would you do if you saw such a sign? Most of us would just Slow Down! Mission accomplished.

I am already paying more than enough for better roads. The problem is that the governemnt are using the money to subsidise trucks. Well made roads also lower the long term operating cost so it isn't just a question of cost it is poor management.
As for saving children lives, I can think of many ways good roads save lives.
As for tax, I would rather pay more in tax if the extra spent on tax to improve roads in the long run saw the savings on car running costs higher than the tax paid. Also, I place value on my time that would be saved if we had first world roading - If I save an hour each way on a four hour journey that as got to be worth over 60 dollars to me.
Everyday when i go out on the roads I do not see too much speeding but have numerous experiences with drivers not paying attention, pulling out without looking, not indicating, driving excessively slowly for the conditions and then going through amber/red lights leaving streams of traffic behind them. Is this you living in your own little world with no consideration for other road users? I indicate, I follow all the road rules, I pay attention and I am considerate.I have a radar detector - and do not exceed the speed limit unless I am overtaking one of these "safe drivers".

I'm astounded at some people's attitudes. These fake radars will not solve our speed and accident issues but they will help. If ACC spend $10K and prevent even 2 accidents each year which could cost insurance, health (ACC) and others more than $20k then it is money well spent from a purely financial point of view. If they save lives and prevent injury that's all the better.
Glenn #17: Grow up. If you're more worried about radio waves than people's safety you're a sad individual.
I've been ticketed once before (not for speeding mind you) and I have no issue with it. It is not a revenue grabbing activity, it is meant to be a deterrant. I'm with Pete #27: Anyone who speeds has no right to complain - you have brokenthe law and should pay the penalty.
Sure we need a change in attitude and sure we need to raise the driving age and sure the nations roads may not be perfect. But stop having a go at people (ACC etc) for trying to do something to reduce speed related accidents.
