A short, sharp southerly is making it's way up the east coast of the South Island, bringing with it thunder, hail and heavy rain.
A MetService spokesperson said the wild weather hit Kaikoura about an hour ago, dropping the temperature by around ten degrees Celcius.
The storm would bring with it hail, thunder, brief but heavy rain and cold wind gusts up to 110kms an hour.
The outlook for the weekend was good for Canterbury and Marlborough, with the southerly front expected to give way to fine, clear weather on Saturday and Sunday.
