George Patterson, 9, was sweating - but smiling - as he crossed the finish line in New Zealand's largest children's triathlon.
George joined more than 2500 Christchurch children in the Weetbix Tryathlon at Queen Elizabeth II Park in Christchurch yesterday. He said he was pleased to receive his gold medal, and free drink bottle.
His mother, Michelle Patterson, said her son competed in a team with two of his brothers, aged 11 and six.
She appreciated the organisers allowing the boys to compete together.
Sanitarium general manager Pierre van Heerden said the event, which is open to children aged seven to 15, was about getting youngsters active, increasing their confidence and encouraging young athletes.
He said Olympic triathlete Debbie Tanner, who made a guest appearance at the event yesterday, got her start in a Weetbix Tryathlon.
