Future proofing Maori

Free health checks have been given to more than 200 Christchurch Maori to help educate future medical practitioners about Maori health.
The health checks were carried out by fifth-year Christchurch-based Otago University medical students at Rehua Marae in St Albans yesterday.
The tests, including blood pressure, cholesterol levels and sleep apnoea, were organised by the Otago University School of Medicine as part of a Hauora Maori Day.
Event co-ordinator Suzanne Pitama said 255 Maori were tested throughout the day.
Participants welcomed the tests, with some "quietly surprised or quietly shocked" by their results, she said.
The day aimed to encourage students to use their course information on Maori health and expose them to Maori culture.
