Children and adults rafted down the Heathcote River yesterday in the annual Christchurch City Council- organised race.

Rafts of all shapes and sizes launched from the jetty opposite the Waltham Lido Pool and finished the course at the footbridge near Hansen Park.

Music, free sausages and prizes were handed out at after the race. Council recreation and sports manager John Filsell said the event was a great "celebration of community pride".

Health concerns about the poor water quality of the Heathcote River, which affected a previous race in December 2008 clearly did not concern yesterday's participants as they poured or shot water at the opposition at every opportunity.
