CUTTING IMAGE: This slightly foreboding picture, The Butcher, is one of the major prize-winners in the 2010 University of Canterbury Students' Association Photography Competition.
The picture, taken by student Ambrose Hickman, took out the colour film section of the awards, judged by Press illustratins editor Richard Cosgrove.
Cosgrove said it took ``a long time'' to select winners from the hundreds of entries received.
"I went round them all and jotted down ones I wanted to look at again, and whittled it down.
``I quite liked [Kitten under a Table] because it was a bit of humour and he's showing a different viewpoint,'' he said.
Luke Merryweather, head of the university's event and activities hub said they received over 800 entries.
``The quality was simply amazing. We were overwhelmed by the number of entries.
``Some of the work is breathtaking, some show extremely technical capability, others tell stories and force you into conversations with other people in the room,'' he said.
Photographs were submitted in four categories: black and white; colour; digital and digitally manipulated.
Students could also vote for a Students' Choice winner. The first prize in each category wins $150, runners up get $50 each. The photographer who wins Students' Choice will receive $100.
Merryweather said the competition would hope to expand to include other Canterbury tertiary institutions like CPIT and Lincoln University next year.
The photographs would be on display in the Shelley Common Room in the UCSA building on campus for the next week.
