Oral health becomes election issue

The controversial issue of fluoridation has become a mayoral hot potato.

Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker claims his main rival, Jim Anderton, wants to take decisions over whether fluoride should or should not be added to the city's water supplies, out of the hands of ratepayers and councillors.

But Anderton today fired back, saying the issue required a national debate.

He slammed Parker as "pathetic'' for trying to make it a mayoral issue.

The issue was not isolated to Canterbury but one that needed a national debate, Anderton said.

Anderton appeared on a recent episode of TVNZ 7's Backbenches show where he outlined his views on the country's oral health standards.

I recently completed research on fluoride and the fluoride debate. From my findings: It is essential that the dosage applied to water fluoridation is consistent with regulations and monitored regularily. Fuoride toxicity can be seriously harmful if dosages and monitoring are not implemented . Toothpaste can be fataly harmful to infants and young children if dosages and monitoring are not supervised. Areas where children who suffer from early childhood caries (requiring hospitalisation and sedated surgery) or are at High risk of caries(tooth decay)may benefit from fluoridated water. In my opinion it is not beneficial in the long term to risk fluorosis and cure early childhood caries. Children are very selfconscious about the way they look and how to fit in socially. Antibiotics is necessary to eliminate the caries bacterium (over 500 species). The bacteria must be present in the oral cavity to initiate the caries process. Research is being conducted in India to perfect a caries bacteria vaccine. Caries is a multifactorial disease. Complications include irrepairable loss of teeth and bone structure (quite painful). For more information check the ministry of health website.

I have always had enormous respect for Jim Anderton and was prepared to vote for him and all his team. Then someone told me that he is in favour of fluoridating water and I am gutted. I think that it is ridiculous to dose the whole population when it is so easy to give children fluoride tablets if that is what the parents wish. Our water in Christchurch is the envy of tourists and people from other parts of NZ. Why on earth would anyone want to spoil it? I can only assume that there are commercial interests involved and someone is hoping to make a lot of money out of it. Sadly, I won't be voting for Jim & co now.

My children grew up with really good teeth because they were taught to brush their teeth and not to eat lollies and drink sugar drinks My daughter was in London on an OE a few years ago, she said the British have bad teeth , my dentist said when sugar was not available during the war in England their teeth were good. Floride has been proved to be a poison and mottles teeth, I have seen children with mottled teeth from Floride, so what does it do to our insides, why would anyone consider adding anything to our beautiful tasting Christchurch water,? only a dim wit I would say,I have had water with Floride and it tastes awful, if you want to take Floride there are tablets available. I don't like Jim Aderton for a start and it has nothing to do with Floride but will if he gets voted in, he has had a great life with an amazing income but apart from that he has not done anything to talk about, now he wants to be Mayor and continue his great life and amazing income. When I was young Christchurch was beautiful it is now a dump mostly, lovely old building have been demolished now supposed art work the council paid thousands for litter our streets looking stupid, like the silly cone in the square ,the light at the bottle neck to look like wheat, there is another by the art centre any engineering workshop could have made in a couple of hours, I would prefer the original Victorian look Christchurch used to have but now gone forever because of past Councils. At least Bob Parker got the dick head boy racers out of the city centre, when you think of the young people who lost their lives going to war to fight for our freedom, and the only way these brainless twits spend their lifes is driving their silly noisey cars around all night, maybe they should go to a library and try and get a brain, obviously their parents are as stupid as them to let them do it, my kids were studying for their future when they were that age, now they have great careers.

Fluoridation ceased in Timaru in 1985.The 'fluoride-pushers' raved on for weeks afterwards that the dental decay would increase now that the fluoride had been taken out of the drinking water. Headlines in our paper in October, 1991, said that the decay rate had soared in Timaru, being at 2.80 but the 'fluoride- pushers' must have forgotten that in 1984 the 12-year-olds, having drunk fluoridated water for the whole of their life, was higher at 3.75. The decay rate for that same age now is 1.79. In 1995 a referendum on this issue showed an overwhelming vote against fluoridation. 71% of those who voted in the referendum said "NO". That was 67% of the whole population of the Timaru District. We are extremely fortunate that our Mayor, Janie Annear, and Council will not reopen the debate on fluoridation because the people have resoundingly said "no" to it.

Do you guys email each other every time there is a fluoride story and then copy and paste your comments?

Good, go Bob!

At least he's highlighted a major issue with our flurodation problem in NZ that needs to end ASAP!

No way will Jim be getting my vote, if somehow they manage to get that toxic sludge into our waterways, I'll be getting a filter, which the cost would be coming off the rates bill!

Of course its an election issue, Jim stated it, its public record what he wants to do, and clearly the public don't want for flurodation to occur...so if this loses him the election - thats GREAT NEWS to me!

I and many others will leave NZ for good if anything is added to our water I am sick of the government workers doing everything but there job. If I was at work doing things that didn't make sense just so I have something to do I would be fired. its only a matter of time before this place falls apart (or gets rid of the trash)

Violence & criminality in Brisbane & surrounding areas, Gold Coast etc., has grown recently with the cumulative effects since silicofluoride poisoning our water supplies from Dec. 2008. Train violence has dramatically soured. If you want violence & crime to continue spiralling out of control & where we can't build enough Courts, police stations & prisons, keep going, if not demand an end to "water fluoridation" and a ban for all time. The information below is a small example of the data available showing the cumulative evidence of harm from 'water fluoridation chemicals' (translation = silicofluoride poisons are the toxic waste from aluminium & fertilizer industries which are so dangerously toxic they cannot be dumped anywhere else EXCEPT in the peoples' water supplies !!! This is a violation of human rights to choose whether or not we can consume anything toxic, remember it is not just the silicofluorides in the water supplies, anything made with water will then be contaminated with silicofluoride poisons, and then we have to look at the added 'fluoride' / 'fluorine' absorption, ingestion & inhalation that many people also receive by way of dental services, dental products, toothpastes, mouthwashes, some medications have fluorinated/fluoridated compounds, anaesthetics and aluminium and fertilizer industry emissions et al, we are drowning in 'fluorides' and then they make sure we are long term slow poisoned for sure by putting it in all our water supplies, this is in my opinion absolutely criminal by those with massive financial interests to instigate, promote and force this on the population. Report from FLUORIDE RESEARCH on WATER FLUORIDATION & CRIME in the United States of America - If water fluoridation were ended, it might take a generation for the effects to recede. If it continues to expand, the “signal” identified in this study may get lost in the “noise” of ENDEMIC VIOLENCE. http://www.fluorideresearch.org/381/files/38111-22.pdf

Parker has been terrible for the City and is unpopular for a reason - now he's raised a red herring and people are biting.

Parker can't campaign on his record and can't compete with Anderton on policy, so he's being underhanded and desperate.
