Norovirus on the increase

New Zealand should prepare for more frequent outbreaks of norovirus, a United States germ expert says.
Environmental microbiologist Charles Gerba, an authority on the detection of bacteria and viruses, spoke in Christchurch about his research.
He said there was little society could do to rid itself of norovirus, which causes severe vomiting and diarrhoea.
This month, Christchurch Hospital was left in gridlock twice after an outbreak of the highly infectious virus.
Gerba said it appeared norovirus was evolving and adapting to closed environments. People seemed to be more susceptible to the virus and had a greater chance of falling seriously ill.
It was inevitable that norovirus outbreaks would increase, he said.
