Bidding for a grounded MiG fighter jet took off last night as a dogfight erupted between two rivals on Trade Me.

The final price for the Russian-built jet, formerly owned by Christchurch property developer David Henderson, soared to $59,454. The winning bidder is believed to be from Auckland.

The auction for the 37-year-old former Polish Air Force aircraft has become the fourth most popular item to be sold on Trade Me, with 257,093 views when the auction closed just after 7pm yesterday.

Bidding burst into life in the last minutes of the auction, rising from $36,200 to $59,454 in 16 minutes.

Trade Me spokesman Paul Ford said the jet was "every boy's dream".

Other popular auctions were a slice of Pita bread featuring the image of Jesus (276,094), a "scary washing machine" (810,802) and the handbag used by former All Blacks captain Tana Umaga to hit a team-mate at a Christchurch bar in 2006 (1,072,893).
