Christchurch's Mayor has hailed the efforts of his citizens in the earthquake's aftermath but warned the danger continues.

The threat of water being contaminated was still very real and Bob Parker said up to 100 inner-city buildings were unsafe and many more could face fresh threats when forecast bad weather strikes tomorrow.

But he said Christchurch residents had been "magnificent'' as they helped family, friends and even starngers through what had been a major disaster for the province.

Structural engineers were inspecting inner-city proeprties and tagging them with stickers that identified their status.

Green stickers meant buildings could be entered, yellow stickers meant those buildings were not open for general business while red-stickered buildings were unsafe and could not be entered.

Some buildings which initially survived Saturday's 7.1 jolt had started to fall away today in the wake of aftershocks.

"Some are wiggling like a loose tooth in a kid's mouth.''

Dozens of pumping stations had been damaged and wastewater was discharging into rivers which was not ideal but unavoidable for now.

The issue of water contamination was very serious and Parker urged residents to boil all drinking water for three minutes even if it looked and smelt fine.

"We don't want a major health problem on top of what has already happened.''

Inspection of key wastewater pipes and sewerage mains this morning showed most were in "better nick'' than first thought.

Safety teams were inspecting chimneys across the city.

The potential for high winds and a cold snap tomorrow could pose potential trouble for chimneys that could be unsafe.

Just because of this tragic event and Bob's quick response, doesn't make up for all of his other follies Simon. The people of Christchurch are smarter than that.

cannot believe you complainers and tall poppy syndrome out there, get in and support the good stuff and what we are doing here... fixing our city. I am embarrassed by your comments.

Given Bob's spending record can we trust him to spend relief money to aid everyone?

Nice to see community pulling together. Do you know what makes me sick. Sonny Bill Williams gets flown by helicopter to Wellington, for a film shoot in Auckland. Has no one up there got any empathy at all, that Chopper may well have been required for emergencies and here it is ferrying a very average citizen about the country as if the shoot is more important than everyones crisis, shame on the directors and shame on SBW, money comes before people, unreal. Hope that ad co has this morning donated $100 K to the moyaral fund.

the mayor has been fantastic keeping everyone upto date with latest news and developments.lack of communication in the first few hours was very frustrating, not knowing how bad things really were. we r in Fendalton and all neighbours lost chimneys. Huge thanks to The builder next door securing the 2nd floor chimney. He didn`t hesitate when we asked to "please can u do our two" Suddenly all neighbours were joining in and he must have done 10 before dark.several houses nearer the railway line seem to have suffered liquifaction problems and foundations and swimming pools moved and emptied. Just sorry for the poor neighbour who is still serious in hospital. My advise is to keep torches close by and wear pyjamas.

Thank you to Bob Parker for being such a great leader through all this, It was reassuring to see you on TV through what really has been a terrifying ordeal. Good on ya mate!

Dear Bob, both my chimneys are cracked, the hot water tank burst and I've had to finish with it, I have cracks in my ceiling and some walls, and the front fence is cracked (all true). I haven't got insurance as I find paying everything else steep enough and took a gamble. Please Bob, could you get it fixed up from the mayoral fund.

Simon #1 to be fair, Bob has showed leadership. He looked tired out on TV News tonight. Like me and others, I doubt he has slept since this happened. I think he deserves the acknowledgement of same.

I've only just got power back on - very impressed with Stuff too: all the reports and pictures. Thanks Stuff!

Bob Parker, I think he is doing a wonderful job. Bob well done, made me and others around proud.

I wouldn't be so sure, Bob has also used this as another opportunity to showboat in front of the cameras. I mean what the hell was the deal with having the camera follow him around while showing John Key around. Yes he stayed calm and in charge, but also made me feel like he was just doing some of it to be in front of the media.

We need change, and through this disaster we can see that someone new needs to step in and help us shape Christchurch in to a thriving city once again. We won't see that with either Bob or Jim, we need someone else, someone who has new ideas and ideals. Someone who can work autonomously from central government and will look for solutions outside the box. If Bob stays in power we will suffer greatly in the long run, whereas if Jim takes over, we're still going to be worse off. We need someone younger than both of them to go the distance for the city, someone who is willing to sacrifice for the city. Use your heads when voting, don't just go out and vote for someone because they are on TV, that is the worst decision you could ever make.
