Kaiapoi's New World will take a year to rebuild, Foodstuffs South Island says, with nearly 90 staff losing their jobs.
Have you lost your job because of the quake? Email reporters@press.co.nz
The supermarket, which employs 34 full time and 52 part-time staff, has been severely damaged by Saturday's earthquake and will not re-open.
Foodstuffs said staff would receive full pay for two months and it would find them jobs in other supermarkets if they wanted to continue working for the company.
Employees have been given supermarket vouchers and offered counselling.
Foodstuffs chief executive Steve Anderson said the company was committed to rebuilding the supermarket but unfortunately for owners Andrew and Jacqui Palmer that would take a year.
"We are very distressed that the damage to the supermarket has meant we are unable to re-open and we are doing everything we can to help all of those affected."

Hi I lived in Pines Beach for 2 years before returning to the UK and all I can say is New World made the best quiche I ever ate! Any news of Rinaldi Ave Pines Beach my old house number 16?????????????
Hi, i worked at kaiapoi new world, i do not no how to explain it but it wasnt just a job we were a family within the business!!! The people on the news had been there pretty much since it opened over 20 years ago.. New World was our life!! no job with ever be the same again... use have no right saying stuff have use lost your house half your stuff and your job??? Them people were offered a holiday to Wanaka but turned it down because she didnt feel she was worthy enough for it, She would be the most deserving!!
I dont get it either. The lady on TV was crying for loosing her job ( i feel sad) at New Word Kaiapoi yet the Head of Foodstuff was claiming that they'll be recieving 2 month pay and 500 worth groceries plus job is guarantee for all unless you chose to take redundancy. hmmmm. My head is even more confused not only from the constant afterschock.
quite an unbalanced, emotive rant between you (james and scott). as i understand it, the staff of n/w are to loose their job (fact) because the business cannot be functioning at all due to damage sustained. the n/w will be rebuild but it may take a year before the place is "up and running". the extraordinary aspect is that tow major competitors (f/stuffs and p/enterprises) are to ensure all those folk do not face the grim future of those that have been made redundant also through no fault of their own (i specifically refer to the lwr redundancies last year).
sure, they have the added hardship (some, not all) of having lost their home too, but at the very least they need not worry about their income and/or future employment prospects.
the offers by both foodstuffs and countdown must be applauded and also regarded as one of those excellent examples where competitors place the people in their community way before their own commercial interests.
James, you're as bad as the bloke who asked if there was any other news aside from the Canterbury quake! You and him need to get a grip and realise the intensity of this disaster and know your facts before spouting rubbish!
Hi James
My friends mum worked at New World and I can assure you that they have lost their jobs and are very stressed at the moment. Yes foodstuffs are doing all they can to help but do you realise that relocating them will mean they will have to travel in to CHC to work, for some with no busses going to Kiapoi this is impossible. On top of the fact that because its Kiapoi most of them have lost their house to.2 months pay is not much when you have no where to live and no other job. (This is no disrespect to foodstuffs and their very generous offer and assistance to its employees, just advising the reality of it all.)
You should be ashamed James, I hate the media as much as the next joe blogs but the poor people of Kiapoi New World have lost their jobs.
A little over the top there, james. These people ARE without jobs, regardless of the fact that their employers have stepped up to help, they will not being going back to their current jobs. And look, they DID post your comment...
Well done to the people of new world, for doing everything they can for their workers.
Hi this news site is completely off the mark. You cannot publish a story like this and on your own website publish another story saying that canterbury has suffered its first job loses at kaiapoi New World. Non of the workers have lost there jobs like your article states they we be relocated if they want, and they get 2 monthes full pay. Increadable how you people spin this whole thing out of control. Scare mongers! Whats the likely hood of you publishing this in the comments...Nill we don't want the truth anywhere near this site ay

@Sam, I work at the Northwood New world, and its true when you work at a place like that, you become a family. We have 6 Kaiapoi staff working for us now, they are such lovely people, and my heart really does go out to them. They have lost alot but they always manage to have a smile on their face, and are willing to have a conversation, they have fit right in with us. Happy to have them there :)
