LATEST: Police are appealing for witnesses after a cyclist was knocked off his bicycle in Belfast early this morning.

The cyclist was hit by a car at the intersection of Main North Road and Richall St about 12.35am.

A Christchurch Hospital spokeswoman said the cyclist, a male in his 40s, suffered serious chest and leg injuries.

The man had undergone surgery this morning and was in a critical condition in the intensive care unit, she said.

Police said the driver of the vehicle is assisting police, but anyone who witnessed the crash is encouraged to call Sergeant Stephen McDaniel at Papanui Police on 03 374 1700.
