More than 1000 people braved sub-zero temperatures to race through kilometres of mud-encased obstacles near Christchurch yesterday.
About 1030 people, including some dressed as fairies and cartoon characters, took part in the Mud, Sweat and Tears Challenge at the Motukarara racecourse.
Race director Kim Preston said it was minus 3 degrees Celsius just before the five-kilometre and 10km event began.
The course, which took weeks to construct, included a mudslide, forest run, hay-bale pyramid, a crawl under barbed wire, horse jumps, water jumps, bridges, mud runs and floating platforms.
"They just got out there and reverted to their childhood."
Preston said one man competed with a mattress tied to his back.
The hot showers provided after the race were popular, he said.
Chris Harrington won the 10km race in 44 minutes 26 seconds, more than a minute faster than last year's winner.

I did this last year, and even though I am not really a runner, I had a great time! Ludicrous good fun! I'm disappointed I was not able to do it this year, but next year I will be there!
