The perfect storm - it brought snow
More than a metre of snow has fallen at a Canterbury skifield over the past week.
Mt Cheeseman Ski Area remained closed, but the huge snowfall had set the field up for a positive – although late – start to the season, Cheeseman Lodge manager Mariska Hesselink said.
"Days of snow falling and high winds have kept both the skifield and the road closed while we wait out the storm."
The winds eased yesterday, giving staff confidence the field could open tomorrow.
Work will focus on checking snow safety and clearing the access road. Porters ski area has received 1.5 metres of snow in the past week, and plans to open today with an average snow base of 50cm on the lower mountain.
