Christchurch businesses will be given a $3.36 million interest-free loan for temporary accommodation in a bid to help the city recover after the February earthquake.

The Restart the Heart initiative was launched in the City Mall today, aiming to provide temporary, relocatable accommodation for displaced businesses.

The project would be funded using a $3.36m interest-free loan from the Government's Christchurch Earthquake Appeal.

More than 65 businesses had already registered their interest in the project, which would see container accommodation placed in the City Mall by the end of October.

"Christchurch businesses want to be trading as the city recovers, and the sooner the better," Prime Minister John Key said.

"The heart of the city is vital, and the businesses which have invested in the area are showing great faith in its future by returning and opening their doors."

Key said the project would give inner-city businesses "more certainty" as they strived to get back on their feet.

The Christchurch Earthquake Appeal is the Government's official fundraiser for Canterbury's recovery effort and has raised more than $97m in pledged and received funds so far.

Once again the council fails the ratepayers. Stop propping up a failing business model and adapt. On top of this absurdity - now they will prevent or penalise development in the suburbs in favour of the inner city - unbelievable. Last one here switch the lights off please. Get on with consents and geophys. Let commerce act naturally.

just what we need a third world shopping centre in a trashed CBD shopping amongst the asbestos dust and rubble, great sounds fun, me I'll stick to the local malls thanks, warmer safer and much more pleasing and uplifting experience, we want some normality not some insanity.

Why try to attract businesses back to the ChCh CBD - it's been dead for years, what with the advent of suburban malls and weekend trading - it's about time the CBD became a mall in itself rather than ad hoc retail that no one bothers with in the weekend .. other than pubs, clubs and cafes..

How true bruce...christchurch has always been a tight little shop run for the benefit of the nobs in control. The inner city was dying before the quakes. They should just dig a hole and roll the corpse in.

Because the owners of the major business operrators in that area went to Christ's or Bede's. The same way everything works in Christchurch

Can someone please tell me why Cashel Street Mall and Ballintynes seem to have a higher priority than any other CBD businesses in the rush to be up and running in time for show week???
