Family traumatised after pet cat mutilated

The sadistic killing of a pet cat and a hedgehog has appalled police and a Timaru family.
Smudge, a small, long-haired, black cat was found outside the Macfarlane family's Waimataitai home on Tuesday morning.
Constable Tig Payne said the family cat had been dismembered. The body of a beheaded hedgehog was close by.
Payne said police had no line of inquiry on the case.
There was no evidence to say the killing was connected to the recent attack on a cat at Caroline Bay that spent two days crawling home after her back leg was cut off in a suspected machete attack, but the events could be related, he said.
"We have seen sick jokes and that, but this is something quite premeditated and sadistic," he said.
Nils Macfarlane's mother, Viv, made the grisly discovery when the 17-year-old cat did not arrive for breakfast.
Smudge was a small, frail house cat that did not move quickly and did not roam far.
"I got up about 7.30am to feed her and she didn't come which she normally does, so my mum went around and saw she had been chopped in half and just placed on the section. It was pretty disturbing," Nils Macfarlane said.
He was also upset for the hedgehog, which he said had been "scalped and left to die".
Macfarlane said he thought hard before agreeing to talk to the media. The last thing he wanted was the culprit receiving recognition for the killing.
"They are obviously not in a good state of mind. I don't want them thinking, 'I've made it'," he said.
"I feel sorry for whoever's done it. They obviously need help."
The killing has left the Macfarlanes concerned. Their property has a large hedge around it, Macfarlane said.
They believe the killings happened in the early hours, and whoever committed them had to enter their property through gates that were usually locked.
"It's very unnerving to know someone has been on your property."
Macfarlane said they had visited neighbours to let them know what had happened and to warn them.
"We ran into one who had heard dogs between 6am and 6.30am. She heard wailing."
At first the Macfarlanes worried the sound was Smudge, but the neighbour said the sound was definitely a dog, Macfarlane said.
Police are keen to hear from anyone with information about the attack or if anyone has noticed anything unusual about their pets.
"If anybody has had something happen to their animal in that area; if they notice their dog has been hurt abnormally."
Payne said the cuts to Smudge had been done with some skill.
"If somebody is out there, they are probably going to do it again."

i am so sorry for your loss how heartbreaking for all the family let hope that they catch the nasty person that would do that hugs to you and your family
The cat killer needs to be caught and punished heavily, it is probably a angry male and he is emotionally crippled. Next, he will start killing people. My sympathy goes to you as I love cats and I am a animal lover.
If I were the police in this case I would be paying good ol Steve a visit!
How is stepping up to killing a person worse? It is the same as killing an innocent, defenceless animal like a cat or a hedgehog. I don't understand how it is any different or any worse. We are not above animals, we're here to take care of them when they can't take care of themselves, much like parents to children. Pets are family members too. It disgusts me to watch people putting our race above another when we're the ones at fault. It's not cats killing cats.
My sympathies to the family this is disgusting. Someone poisoned my sisters dog last december with slug bait as well as poisoning two other dogs, my sisters dog died in agony and with a huge vet bill to boot. This person is sick and I saddens me that we seem to becoming a society that has little or no empathy for defenceless creatures. This cat was of a great age 17 - that is fantastic and some little creep has to come along and get their jollies by murdering it. Some sickos out there. Steve 3# ditto as to the other posters - you are not fit to own any animal - feel sorry for your cat.
Constable Tig Payne said "If somebody is out there, they are probably going to do it again."
Might there not be anybody out there, then? Engage brain before opening mouth, Constable.
Steve #1 you shouldn't be allowed to have a cat or any kind of animal after making a comment like that. I'm just hoping you were endulging in some sick humour even though this is no laughing matter, if not then you need some serious psychiatric help.
We have cats and yes on the odd occasion one of the nieghbours cats might venture in during the day but that's the life of being a cat owner and what comes with it. As suggested in other posts there are ways of keeping them out and or a spray bottle of water does the trick.
No animal deserves the sadistic killing that this sicko did.
This concerns me greatly for a myriad of reasons, but mostly because I believe that this is the beginning of something more sinister. It is likely this sort of behaviour will manifest into harming people. This is actually serious, this person is unwell and needs psychiatric help.
I will happily put money towards a reward to catch this person if The Press or Police can organise a bounty. My heart goes out to the owners.
