The distraught family of a Thai woman who never resurfaced while diving for crayfish are coming to terms with the fact she will never return home alive.

The body of the 37-year-old Bua-Ngoen Thongsi, a Thai national living in New Zealand, was recovered by the police dive squad last Tuesday after she went missing almost three days prior.

A police spokeswoman said she was diving with a male friend for crayfish, near Motunau Beach, North Canterbury.

After bad weather conditions hampered the search effort, Thongsi's body was discovered about 100 metres from her last known position.

A family spokesman said today: "We are all still in shock and slowly coming to terms with the fact that she is not coming home.  We understand that there is media and public interest in the incident that took her from us, but ask our privacy be respected while we grieve."

The police spokeswoman said police and victim support were working with Thongsi's next of kin who were "understandably extremely upset".

Police investigations into the incident are ongoing. The death has been referred to the coroner.
