Christchurch's open-fire ban will be temporarily lifted this month.

The Christchurch City Council today said the ban would be lifted from Friday until Monday, April 30.

This means residents in urban areas, including Christchurch City, Brooklands, New Brighton, Sumner, Lyttelton, Governors Bay, Diamond Harbour, Little River and Akaroa, can light open fires.

Environment Canterbury's clean-air winter fire ban will come into force next month.

This prohibits open fires from  May 1 to August 31.
