Spilled sewage on a road caused a car to slide into a pole this morning.

A Fire Service spokesman said sewage covered a small part of Aldwins Rd, near Linwood Ave, causing some cars to slide.

One car crashed into a pole about 6.20am.

The driver was treated at the scene for minor injuries by St John.

Another passing motorist said she was forced to slow down.

"There was a large amount of what looked like sludge on the road, and quite deep. I slid a little and slowed right down, but the smell was disgusting."

Traffic was reduced to one lane while the spill was cleaned up by the city council.

The Fire Service spokesman said it was possible the waste truck driver would not have known there had been a spill.
