A man accused of burgling red-stickered Mt Pleasant houses has pleaded not guilty and is opting for trial by jury.

Justin John Ackland, a 48-year-old Lyttelton contractor, was arrested after a resident reported a man going into an unstable, abandoned house on the cliff edge, but Ackland told police he worked for a construction company and was legally allowed to enter the property.

Ackland has been charged with burgling a Balmoral Ln house on February 18 and another in the same street on April 14.

Christchurch District Court Judge Alistair Garland today remanded Ackland on bail to a post-committal conference on July 13.
