Two teenagers are dead after their car crashed into a power pole and split in two nears Hinds, south of Ashburton.

The men, believed to both be aged 19, died at the scene.

An Ashburton police spokeswoman said the car jumped a ditch and hit a power pole in Hinds Arundel Rd between midnight and 2am today.

She said a milk tanker came across the crash about 2am.

The teenagers' names would be released as soon as next of kin were informed, she said.
