The driver of a car that plunged into the Avon River yesterday morning was lucky to escape injury, Christchurch police say.

Police attended the crash at 11am yesterday along with ambulance crews. A police spokesman said he did not know the circumstances around the incident but said the driver was uninjured.

"But he was very cold," he said.

The car had sunk and the Christchurch City Council had been asked to remove it from the river, he said.

Messages posted on Trade Me's community board this morning said the incident happened at the Avondale-end of New Brighton Road.

A Trade Me user, who witnessed the incident, said the man " walked away fine but extremely cold and shocked".

It is not known whether the man had been drinking.

Opinion poll

Is the mayor correct to put libraries, pools and community facilities ahead of the Town Hall?

Absolutely, they're far more important

I think funds should be split between those facilities and the town hall

No, the Town Hall should be rebuilt first

Just demolish the Town Hall completely instead of rebuilding
