A northwest precinct in Christchurch's Re:Start container mall will be open for business by the start of next month.

Re:Start director Paul Lonsdale said organisers had wanted to expand the mall for some time and chose an area near the former Shades Arcade as the best location.

The new precinct would include several food operators, increasing the number of options for visitors.

Some businesses from the southern part of the container mall would move into the new precinct to make way for a new building development, Lonsdale said.

Work on the precinct was likely to be completed by the end of the month, with a launch party held in early July.Lonsdale said organisers planned to boost the amount of car parking in the area.

The demolition of Gough House in Hereford St would be completed soon, allowing the mall to "open up" the street and make it easier for people to park.

"At the moment, people drive down there and think the road's blocked, when it's actually one of the main entrances to the car park."

Lonsdale said organisers were also working on developing walkways to connect the mall with major businesses on the eastern edge of the central city.

Opinion poll

Is the mayor correct to put libraries, pools and community facilities ahead of the Town Hall?

Absolutely, they're far more important

I think funds should be split between those facilities and the town hall

No, the Town Hall should be rebuilt first

Just demolish the Town Hall completely instead of rebuilding
