Two women who were in a car crash near Kaikoura on Monday remain in a critical condition.

Four people, all from North Canterbury, were flown by helicopter to Christchurch Hospital after the car hit a tree at 2pm on the Inland Kaikoura Rd.

The two women involved in the crash remained in intensive care in a critical condition, a hospital spokeswoman said last night.

No other details of their condition were available but, on Monday, a St John spokesman said one of the women had a serious abdominal injury, while the other had serious chest and abdominal injuries as well as a broken leg.

Of the two other male occupants, one was in the hospital's general ward in a comfortable condition, while the other had been treated and discharged.

Police were investigating the incident.
