Old smoke bomb found in Linwood
Part of a Christchurch street was blocked off after contractors working on a house found an old smoke bomb near a gas cylinder.
A police spokesman said contractors working on a Hay St, Linwood, house reported finding a smoke bomb in the backyard about 9.10am today.
The site was cleared and secured quickly because the item was found near a gas cylinder, the spokesman said.
The army's bomb-disposal team identified the item as a "smoke canister".
The canister was removed from the site and the street was cordoned up to 100 metres on either side of the house as a precaution, the spokesman said.
