A 12-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted in Dunedin last night.

The girl was walking from her home to her mother's workplace when she was pulled into a carport and sexually assaulted, Dunedin senior sergeant Brian Benn said.

Police were alerted to the incident on Bayview Rd in South Dunedin about 8pm.

The girl managed to fight off the offender and escape, Benn said.

She described the offender as being in his late teens, with a wispy beard and in dark clothing.

Police guarded the street overnight and a scene examination would be conducted this morning.
