Those planning outdoor activities today are being warned that heavy rain could make conditions hazardous across much of the west and northern South Island.

Metservice said most of the rain was expected to fall in the Buller and northwest Nelson ranges, where a further 270mm could fall.

A heavy rain warning was in place for the ranges of Nelson Lakes National Park, the Richmond Range and the Marlborough Sounds.

Rain also looked set to intensify in much of Westland this evening, with 130 to 150 mm of rain expected to fall around the ranges today.

A weather warning was in place for Westland and the headwaters of the Canterbury lakes and rivers.

Rivers and streams, including those originating near the east of the Southern Alps, could rise rapidly and slips and surface flooding was possible in some areas.
