The number of lanes open at a busy Christchurch intersection will be reduced from today.

Work to replace wastewater pipes will reduce the number of lanes available for motorists at the intersection of Bealey and Fitzgerald avenues with Whitmore and London streets.

Road users turning into Fitzgerald Ave from Bealey Ave will have only one right-turning lane, while those heading into Fitzgerald Ave from Whitmore St will also have only one lane.

A Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team spokeswoman said the lane closure was to allow workers to safely replace wastewater pipes at the intersection.

In nearby Hills Rd, the road had also been reduced to one northbound lane from Dudley to Guild streets, with southbound traffic detoured via Slater St until August 20.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
