Concerns about the safety of school pupils and university students are behind city council plans to change the layout of busy Ilam Rd.
The council wants to create a series of pedestrian crossing points along Ilam Rd between Rountree St and Maidstone Rd so pedestrians can cross the road in two stages.
Hundreds of Canterbury University students and staff cross Ilam Rd each day. Many Ilam School and Kirkwood Intermediate School pupils also cross it.
The council plans to install median islands with pedestrian crossing points and add buildouts to reduce crossing distances and make it easier for pedestrians to see vehicles in Ilam Rd.
The changes will reduce the number of on-street parking spaces in the area by about 38, but the council hopes the falloff in student numbers at the university - it has lost 2000 students since 2010 - will offset that reduction.
The public are being invited to comment on the proposed safety improvements through the council's Have Your Say website.
