Man dead after fall at Marlborough bach
A 57-year-old Christchurch man was found dead yesterday morning by his wife and son after falling off a balcony at his holiday home in the Marlborough Sounds, police say.
The man had been staying at the family bach in Blackwood Bay over the weekend with his wife and son, who is in his 20s, and was due to return to Christchurch on Sunday, Sergeant Kris Payne, of Picton police, said.
His room was on the mezzanine floor of the Queen Charlotte Sound bach, and had an open balcony about three metres high with no railing. He appeared to have fallen off at some stage between Sunday night and early yesterday morning, when his body was discovered by his wife, Payne said.
The family had been staying at the bach, which was accessible only by boat, for about 30 years.
Police were not treating the death as suspicious, Payne said.
Police have not released his name.
