A man who suffered head injuries after being hit by a bus last night remains in Christchurch Hospital in a "stable" condition.

The incident happened just after 8pm at the intersection of Bealey Ave and Papanui Rd.

A St John ambulance spokesman said the man, in his 20s, was taken to the emergency department in a serious condition.

An ambulance and rapid response vehicle attended.

Acting shift commander Sergeant Dean Lawrence said police would be investigating the incident.

"It was dark and it had been raining but whether or not that was a contributing factor, well it's too early to tell at the moment."

Traffic in the area was not affected, Lawrence said.
