A man who police believe has the highest drink-driving level recorded in Canterbury admitted drink-driving and dangerous-driving charges yesterday.
Nileshkumar Vallabh Patel, 34, a self-employed Kaiapoi dairy owner, was driving in Ohoka Rd in North Canterbury when he drove over the centre island, drove on the wrong side of the road and veered towards school children on the footpath. He then veered left and collided head-on with a van.
Reparation is being sought for damage to the road and road signs.
At a Rangiora District Court sitting in Christchurch, Judge Oke Blaikie remanded Patel on bail to October 19 for sentence and ordered a pre-sentence report and reparation report.
The accident happened on August 16. When police attended, they found Patel incoherent.
His results showed he was more than five times the legal limit with 406 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. The limit is 80mg.
