A daylight assault has left a Hokitika man in hospital with severe head injuries after being left for dead in a rural spot.
Constable Neil Gillespie, of Hokitika, said the 57-year-old man had been in a car with two Greymouth men in their mid-20s on Thursday afternoon near Hokitika.
While there, the men brutally attacked him with a metal object, possibly a wheel brace or metal bar, before leaving the victim at the scene, probably unconscious.
Police were contacted about 8pm after the heavily bleeding man managed to make his way to a nearby house to seek help.
He was taken to Grey Base Hospital by ambulance with deep cuts and bruising to his head and face.
Gillespie said the offenders were likely to face serious charges, and police were chasing strong lines of inquiry.
