Police are investigating a suspicious fire at a vacant house in Aranui last night.

Fire crews and police were called to the house on the corner of Soberton and Warblington streets about 7.15pm.

A police spokesman said the home was extensively damaged on the second storey.

The fire appeared to have been deliberately lit, he said.

Fire safety officer Mark Thomas said fire investigators were attending about one suspected arson in red-zoned properties every week - a concerning trend.

Police would like to hear from members of the public who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously near the corner of Soberton and Warblington streets on yesterday afternoon or evening.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Dion Murray on (03) 374 1728.

To provide information anonymously contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
