An intruder who was caught by the occupants of a North Canterbury home but managed to get away is still on the run.

Police say the attempted burglary of the Parsonage Rd home in Woodend occurred about 1am on Monday when three of the occupants, a woman, her son and a boarder, left the house.

But the woman's husband remained behind, asleep in bed, and two international students were also home at the time.

Homeowner Correna Briggs said they had gone to McDonald's in Rangiora and had been gone only about 20 minutes when they returned and found the door wide open.

"We looked at each other and thought, 'We didn't leave that open'. As we were standing there he shot across the hallway and my son Jayden said, 'I'm sure that wasn't dad'. [Our boarder] Jacob grabbed a golf club and went off down the hallway. It all happened pretty fast," Briggs said.

She said the intruder then ran into the bathroom and jumped out the window.

But Jayden and Jacob managed to apprehend the man and "had a few words to him", she said.

However, he managed to break free and fled by jumping the fence, with the men in pursuit.

The man, who had also broken into a vehicle in the driveway before entering the house, was described as a Caucasian, in his mid to late 30s and about 1.75 metres tall.

Anyone who saw a silver or light blue early-2000s Toyota Corolla sedan in the area at the time, or anyone with information is asked to call Sergeant Colin Stewart on 313 2671.
