Burnt car may contain human remains
Kaikoura police are investigating a burnt vehicle that may contain a human body.
A member of the public reported the vehicle in Kiwa Rd off State Highway 1, about 15 kilometres north of Kaikoura, today.
It was unclear how long it had been there.
Detective Sergeant Dave Woodley, of the Blenheim CIB, said there were possibly human remains in the car, but this could not be confirmed until an investigation had been completed.
The vehicle had been badly damaged by fire. It was not visible from SH1 and was obscured by bushes.
Marlborough and Kaikoura police have secured the scene, placing tarpaulins over the car. The scene will be guarded overnight.
Staff from Environmental Science and Research, which provides forensic science services to the police, were travelling from Christchurch to examine the car, Woodley said.
A scene examination would be carried out to determine whether there was a body in the car and, if so, the deceased's identity and the cause of death, he said.
