A pregnant woman has been killed and four people hospitalised after a serious crash north of Timaru.
The two-car crash occurred just before 3pm Saturday and forced police to shut down part of State Highway 1 near the intersection Divans Rd, 5km north of Timaru.
A car on Divans Rd appears to have pulled out onto SH1 and the vehicles have collided.
A pregnant 24-year-old Timaru woman has been killed as a result and her husband, who was the driver, was thrown from the vehicle, sustaining serious injuries.
Their two children aged 4 and 5 were in the back seat and have been treated for minor injuries.
Three St John ambulances were sent to the scene and one female passenger was deceased upon arrival, a spokesman said.
Four other passengers were taken to Timaru Hospital, including one with critical injuries and one with very serious injuries.
Police are still diverting traffic from the highway but said no other details are available.
