Rodeo cowboy dragged behind bucking horse
A cowboy was spectacularly dragged behind a bucking horse and smashed into fences at Methven Rodeo today.
Cowboy Daryl Church suffered only minor injuries in the incident, a St John spokesman said.
Church was dragged around the arena for about 100 metres when his hand became stuck in the horse's rigging, while competing in the bareback bronc class.
Methven Rodeo president Dave Harper said the rigging was like a suitcase handle.
Cowboys have to hold on with one hand and release their grip by holding their palm flat.
When Church fell off on the opposite side to the hand he was holding on with, his hand became stuck.
With his hand supporting his body weight as he was dragged, he could not hold his palm flat to slip out of the rigging.
Pick up riders and cowboys on foot stopped the horse and released Church.
