Two foreign climbers have been rescued by helicopter after being stranded on a mountain in Fiordland overnight.
Police launched a rescue operation about 7.30am today after being notified two men needed help at Mt Crosscut, about five kilometres from the Homer Tunnel.
Danny Murphy, from Ireland, and Thierry Thouvard, of France, had failed to return from their climb last night.
Acting Senior Sergeant Phil Berryman, of Invercargill, said a man had called police by satellite phone about the climbers.
The caller could see the two men waving, so they appeared OK, Berrryman said.
The climbers were rescued by Southern Lakes Helicopters this morning.
