Three aftershocks, including two of "moderate" intensity, struck Canterbury overnight.
The first, a "light" magnitude-3.2, struck at 8.40pm at a depth of 5km. It was located 5km south of Christchurch and was reported as being felt by more than 500 people as of this morning.
A magnitude-4 quake, described as "moderate" by GeoNet, struck at 3.17am 20km east of Christchurch and was 8km deep.
Just over 240 people reported that they felt it as of this morning.
The third quake, a "moderate" magnitude-3.3 struck about 20 minutes later, but was reported as being felt by only 48 people.
It was 2km deep and 20km west of Christchurch.
Twitter user Sophiemoo2 said the magnitude-3.2 quake made her feel sick to her stomach. "It’s been so long," she said.
After the early morning quakes, Rebuild Christchurch posted on its Facebook page: "Wake up Chch the alarm clock just went off."
