Knox lighting wins design award
Biggest kick 'winning award for Christchurch'
A Christchurch lighting designer has won a prestigious award for his work on Knox Church.
Kevin Cawley, of Lighting Design, won the Award for Excellence at the Illumination Engineering Society Awards in Auckland Friday night.
"The biggest kick I've got is we've won [the award] for Christchurch," said Cawley.
He worked to light up Knox Church's ceiling using existing light fittings already inside the building.
"The whole point was the give the heart and soul back to the church. The church is broken, but not beaten, just like Christchurch is broken but not beaten."
He wanted the emphasise the architecture in the church's ceiling and actually took away light fittings from inside the church to achieve the effect he wanted.
The project was part of the Victoria Street Project Group, led by Christchurch Casino chief executive Brett Anderson.
Originally the church was to be lit up for Christmas last year, but it had been lit up every night since then.
